The High Court in Lira has sentenced a 30-year-old man to 40 years in prison for murdering his wife.
Calvin Alele, a resident of Lira City was convicted on Monday by Justice Duncan Gaswaga for the death of Scovia Amule in 2019.
According to the prosecution, in January 2019 at Kabalega Market in Dokolo District with malice aforethought unlawfully caused the death of Amule. It adds that Amule and Alele left their home in Ober Kampala in the then Lira Municipality on her motorcycle but they never returned home. Amule’s burnt body was found in Kabalega market in Dokolo District weeks after she went missing.
Court also heard that Alele fell in love with Amule in 2016 when she was a bursar at Leo Atubo College and started living together in Lira Town.
However, a year after, they got misunderstandings after Alele discovered that Amule had two grown-up children.
After Amule’s disappearance, her burnt body was found dumped in Kabalega market in Dokolo District.
Justice Gaswaga, said that the prosecution had proved beyond reasonable doubt that Alele murdered his wife.
“I have considered all that has been said. This is a very unfortunate incident because the deceased was burnt beyond recognition. The punishment is to help the convict reform so that by the time he is free he can be a good person in the community.”
“I shall impose a sentence of 40 years. The 2 years,10 months, and 42 days you spent on remand shall be deducted. The properties of the deceased shall also be handed back to the family and you can as well make an appeal through the court of appeal,” He added.
Earlier Jonathan Okello, the State Attorney said that Alele is a first-time offender, he asked the court to sentence him to at least 45 years because he intended to cause the death of a hardworking woman who was struggling to raise her children and the family.
