A yet-to-be-identified person has been confirmed dead following a tanker explosion along the Mpondwe-Lhibiriha border point in Kasese District.
The accident occurred on Tuesday afternoon after a tanker carrying spirit used in making alcohol rammed into the Ebola/Covid-19 screening unit at Mpondwe border point following brake failure before it exploded into flames.
The isolation unit was also burnt down.
The victim is reportedly a Congolese co-driver who was in the truck.
An eye witness Samuel Masereka, said the tanker whose registration number is yet to be established was heading to DR Congo but its brakes failed shortly after the URA offices in Mpondwe and rammed into the screening unit.
He said he saw three women being rushed to hospital with burns but suspects there could have been more people who got injured.
The Rwenzori East Police Spokesperson Ismail kaawo said police is still investigation the possible cause of the explosion but doesn’t rule out a possibility of the faulty break system.
