The territorial police command in Kwania District are investigating a case of suspected murder by poisoning of one Mike Odur.
Odur, a 40-year-old resident of Obolocani village, Ajar parish, Chawente Sub county in Kwania District died on Sunday afternoon after drinking some suspicious concoction.
It is alleged that on 12th February 2022, the area MP Kwania County Tony Ayo hired a witch doctor identified as Peter Ogwang to perform a ritual at his place in Obolo Cani village following theft of his 8 head of cattle, which ended in three people including the deceased Mike Odure, Innocent Okello and another only identified as Okello being poisoned.
Reports indicate that the trio were individually asked to pay a fine of 3.000.000 but Odur failed to raise the money, hence he was forced by Peter Ogwang and Walter Ebuu to drink a liquid substance which is believed to have caused his death.
Jimmy Patrick Okema, the North Kyoga Police Spokesperson confirmed the incident saying more samples have been extracted from Odur’s kidney and spleen to be submitted to Government Analytical Laboratory for further findings.
He added that all suspects are still at large but the MP will be summoned to record a statement.
“We are yet to summon the area MP through the Director of Criminal Investigations to come make statement at the police over his involvement in inviting the witch doctor,” Okema said. “We would like to advise members of the public to desist from primitive acts and ways for handling situations but rather go through normal and formal ways as enshrined in the constitution of the Republic of Uganda.”
However, Tony Ayo who denied having a hand in the whole exercise, confirmed having heard about it after it had happened saying he was not even at home at that time.
Ayo further explained that the last time he complained about animals getting lost from his home was in 2016 when thieves took 27 cows and 40 goats, a reason why he stopped rearing goats.
Translation:“I was not aware of this and the correction I should make is that the incident happened at my brother’s home not my home because a man who is married even I as an MP, cannot control what happens at his brother’s home and I have not lost any animal. Secondly I have my own kraal just like my brothers who have their own and then I registered a complaint about five years ago when some people stole my brother’s animals (not even mine) then later in that 2016 they stole 40 goats and up to date I do not keep goats.” Ayo instead implicated his younger brother who he said was desperate to prove himself innocent after he (Ayo) accused him of having a hand in the loss of his animals some years back.
Translation:“But what happened is that I arrested my brother in connection to the theft while the other brother was beaten by the clan for trying to cohabit with a witch so I think my brother was desperate to prove himself and he theft of using the help of someone called butaleza unfortunately I am very strict so they fear me with other things that is why I was not aware of anything until yesterday when I was surprised by a call telling me all these. I told them because they thought my opinion in the matter was not important they should sort it out because I do not support theft or witchcraft and I’m not going to be a party to it.” Meanwhile Moses Onguu Okello, the LCIII chairperson says he was not aware of the incident until yesterday when Odur died saying the area LCI chairperson was not at the scene to give him a better report although the locals claim the LCI has been moving around informing people that Ayo Tony is bringing a witch doctor.
However, according to him, the witch doctor was invited by a younger brother (who he declined to identify) to the MP.
This is the second incident involving a witch doctor and theft reported this month. On the 8th last week, a thief arrived running to the scene of crime with stolen money and a swarm of bees covering his back after he reportedly stole the money from a mobile money agent in Apac town.
It is alleged that the mobile money agent reported the case to police who did not follow up, so instead proceeded to Kaberamido district where he sought the services of a witch doctor who later “deployed” the bees which “arrested” the thief. He was later handed over the area LCI for reconciliation.
