Missing equipment from Kayunga Regional Referral Hospital has affected the final installations of the facility’s private wing.
The hospital management secured equipment worth 400 million Shillings from the government to complete the installation of the facility, however some of the equipment went missing.
The Hospital Medical Director, Dr. Robert Ssentongo says the stolen equipment was meant to complete the installation of the facility. The equipment included a biomedical engineering tool kit, sanitary plumbing appliances, brazing torch, map gas, hand drill, charging valve, electric blower and a vacuum pump.
“The facility is too big for the available security personnel to monitor, creating loopholes for thieves,” Dr. Ssentongo notes. “However, currently police are investigating the theft which happened at the private wing and they shall be able to reach a useful conclusion.”
URN has established from the Ssezibwa Regional Police Spokesperson Hellen Butoto that so far police managed to intercept some of the equipment in Lugazi town.
She also reveals that much as the facility administrators were summoned by police for questioning, they have further summoned the facility’s biomedical engineer, Phillip Ddungu to record a statement.
“The equipment we intercepted is vital in installation, repair and maintenance, investigations are still ongoing and anytime we shall brief the relevant authorities about our findings,” Butoto says.
The Senior Biomedical Engineer at the Ministry of Health, Tadeo Byabagambi says they received information about the missing appliances at Kayunga hospital and have recommended an audit to be carried out so that important data is captured for the ministry of health to update relevant authorities about the matter.
Kayunga hospital which is among the recently renovated facilities, was given additional units such as emergency, physiotherapy in and out-patient departments, isolation wards, oxygen plant, hostels for internes and doctor’s quarters before its elevation to a regional referral hospital.
The facility receives referrals from lower units in Kayunga, Mukono, Buikwe, Buvuma, Luwero and Nakasongola. The facility commissioned by the president in 2021 covers a population of about 2.5 million people.
