An AK47 rifle in Luwero district has been recovered buried in the soil. According to Police, the gun was recovered from Kintu farm in Kyangabakama village in Kamira town council in Luwero district. Living Twazagye, the Luwero District Police Commander, says that a guard deployed a the farm saw the gun butt buried in the soil while patrolling around 8:00 am and alerted Kabunyata Police Post.
Twazagye explains that officers rushed to the farm and dug in the ground before they recovered a rusty AK47 rifle with a magazine, adding that the gun has been transferred to Luwero Central Police Station for further investigations.
He says that they want to ascertain whether the firearm was used in criminal activities and those behind it. In July this year, unknown armed thugs attacked two field force officers guarding traffic police at the roadblock at Kiwumpa village, five kilometers to Luwero town council. The assailants killed one of the officers and left others nursing injuries.
They also made off with two firearms belonging to the officers. Twazagye, says that the recovered firearm is not among those stolen and the hunt is still ongoing for the guns. Geoffrey Bukenya, the LC 1 Chairperson of Kyangabakama village, says that residents believe that the gun could have been left behind during the 1981-1986 National Resistance Army war.
“The area was an epicenter of the NRA War and we believe that the fighters could have left it there while on run. The gun was too rusty which means that it has been buried there for long,” Bukenya said. Although the NRA war ended 36 years ago,Luwero and Nakaseke districts are not yet free of war materials.
In November 2021, three children died at Segalye village in Semuto sub-county after being hit by an explosive they were playing with. Another person was killed and four others were injured critically in another explosion at Kapeeka trading centre in Nakaseke district. The five had picked the explosive from metal scrap. It’s believed the bombs remained behind during the National Resistance Army War of 1981-1986.
