At least 10 bodies have been confirmed by authorities and hundreds of people are still missing as floods continue to destroy properties in Rukoki sub county in Kasese District.
Ms Irene Nakasiita the Uganda Red cross spokesperson said that this catastrophe was caused by the heavy downpour that the region has been receiving of late and it happened at 4am in the morning affecting homes at Kasika village Rukoki sub county.
“This was due to heavy rains that hit the area last night. Eight dead bodies were recovered this morning and six others referred to St.Paul’s Hospital in Kasese Municipality,” she said.
The Uganda National Meteorological Authority, not long-ago, alerted the Rwenzori sub region on the seasonal rains that would continue until mid-late November this year These districts include Kasese, Bundibugyo, Kabarole, Ntoroko among others.
In the past years, the rainy months of the year have greatly affected districts like Kasese due to floods and landslides. This has left many people dead and destroyed houses, property and many people have been displaced.
Most of the causes of these disasters like floods and landslides in districts like Kasese have been due to poor farming methods and other agricultural methods used by locals living in such areas that are likely to be affected.
Nakasiita also said that several others are still missing, and that the Uganda Red Cross response team is on the ground working with local authorities and other responders in the community to search for the other missing persons.
She explains that such disasters might be due to the increase in expected heavy rains that is likely to be happening continuously this month across the country.
The Red Cross team in the past issued an early warning to a number of areas including Kasese as being one of the districts at risk of landslides due to heavy rains.
