The construction of the Amuru-Rhino-Camp ferry is nearing completion, eight years since its works began in 2015. Currently, engineers from the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) are assembling the components of the ferry at Awuvu lading site in Rhino camp town council in Madi Okollo district.

Works on the office block, staff quarters, and waiting Shade for passengers at the landing site are also nearing completion. On-spot graveling of the access road to the Amuru landing site in the Amuru district is also ongoing. So far, 6 km out of 13 km of the proposed access road has been spot graveled, according to UNRA.

Allan Ssempebwa, the UNRA communications manager told Uganda Radio Network-URN in an interview that they hope to complete the remaining works before the end of this current financial. He attributed the delayed completion of the project to funding challenges noting that this project is financed through their budget.
Alfred Mawa, a resident of Awuvu cell in Rhino camp town council, says they have been waiting for the ferry for almost eight years adding that the new vessel will give them an opportunity to improve trade and business.

Patrick Atabo, another resident notes that many people lost their lives due to strong winds on River Nile while crossing to Amuru on canoes. He says that once the ferry starts operations, such incidents will not happen.

Major Leti, who operates a business at the “Kampala” landing site market in Amuru district says the ferry has been long overdue. According to Leti, most boat operators have taken advantage to increase transport costs from Shs2,000 to Shs5,000 because of the absence of the ferry. The Amuru-Rhino-Camp ferry, which is expected to offer a shorter link between Arua and Gulu cities through River Nile is in fulfillment of President Yoweri Museveni’s pledge to the people of Madi-Okollo district.
