A mob in Arua district has stoned and killed a boda boda rider, only identified as Baraka.
The territorial police said that Baraka is a male adult, a resident of Nyio Village Aru territory in DR Congo but a lugbara by tribe . The incident occurred on 14th March 16, 2023 at 2:00PM at Adraka village,Logori sub county in Arua district.
“Baraka is alleged to have stolen a motorcycle from Zombo District and rode towards Arua district direction an informer says on a phone call from Zombo district. Mob attacked Baraka when he reached Adraka village, Logiri subcounty, Arua district and he was stoned to death instantly.The incident was reported to Vurra Police Station by a one Dieudone Awuzu, male adult aged 36years, a Congolese by Nationality, Chairperson boda boda riders in Aru territory in DR Congo,” the police said in a statement.
Police acted by visiting and documenting the scene of crime, conveyed the body to Arua Regional Referral Hospital mortuary for postmortem. No arrests have been made yet, investigations continue under Arua district CRB 39/2023.
The number deaths by mob action was on the rise from the year 2013 to 2019 according to Uganda police force annual crime reports, 746 deaths by mob action were reported and investigated in 2019 compared to 426 in 2013 a 75%increase. And in 2020 decreased by 27.6%. A total of 540 cases of murder by mob action were reported in 2020 compared to 746 cases in 2019.
The police urges the general public to respect the right to life and not take away the lives of others unlawfully through mob action. Such people should be handed over to police for proper for proper investigation and appropriate actions taken thereafter.
