National Unity Platform has sacked former Leader of Opposition Mathias Mpuuga from the role of commissioner, just weeks after he was named in the position citing allegations of corruption following the ongoing online protest dubbed £Ugandaparliamentexhibition.
The leading opposition political party arrived at the position after a meeting that sat at their party headquarters for over 12 hours at Kavule in Kampala where Mpuuga was quizzed on why he had accepted the money.
The meeting included party president, Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine, leader of opposition, Mr Joel Ssenyonyi, party secretary General Mr David Lewis Rubongoya and chief opposition whip in parliament Mr John Baptist Nambeshe.
Other people in the meeting included senior party leaders like Mr Medard Ssegona, Ms Jolly Mugisha among others.
Sources who attended the meeting told this publication that the leaders in question who had been sighted in the protest were supposed to answer queries of alleged corruption were Mpuuga and Mr Nambeshe who was quizzed for recruiting relatives in various positions. But the meeting found allegations against the latter unsubstantiated before the guns turned to the former.
“He said he had received the money in question which is Shs500m but he was ready to return it if the party gave him another chance,” the sources said.
The statement issued by the party this afternoon shows that not only government officials have been revealed during the protest but also opposition leaders including the former LOP Rt.Hon.Mathias Mpuuga.
“At the meeting Rt Hon Mpuuga admitted that he indeed took part in this wrongdoing and apologised for the same. In light of this, he was strongly advised that the moral thing to do in the circumstances is to step down from his role as parliamentary commissioner with immediate effect,” in part read the statement.
The party deputy spokesperson, Mr Waiswa Mufumbiro confirmed the statement indicating that it was the true position of the party.
“We have always espoused accountability to Ugandans regardless of which party you belong to. We have made the decision and we stand by it come what may,” Mr Mufumbiro said in an interview for this story.
Asked if they were ready with the replacement for Mr Mpuuga, Mufumbiro said, “We have done it at party level now we are moving to make it formal in parliament and we shall update the general public on what happens next with time.”
The protest was aimed at unmasking and exposing the massive corruption, abuse of office and gross mismanagement of public affairs by the leadership of parliament and other leaders.
