Reports are indicating that seven individuals have been apprehended by the police in Kibuku following an assault on 19-year-old Nakirya Shakira, reportedly carried out by her uncles.
The incident, which occurred on Saturday, April 20th, 2024, was brought to the attention of the authorities by Pastor Nicholas Kitwa, who reported the case to the Kadama Police Station (SD Ref. 13/22/4/2024).
A video recording of the assault subsequently went viral on various social media platforms.
Allegedly, Shakira was targeted by her uncles due to her decision to attend church, despite the family being of Muslim faith.
Shakira had been experiencing disturbances, which led the family to seek help from a shrine, but with no success. Upon a friend’s recommendation, Shakira decided to seek spiritual assistance from the Sved (Balokole) church.
Upon learning of Shakira’s visit to the church, her uncles reported the matter to her mother, who was abroad in Saudi Arabia. In response, Shakira’s mother instructed that she be punished with a severe beating.
The incident took place at the home of Late Hajji Kosi in Bugolya Cell, Nabunyere Ward, Kadama Town Council, along the Kadama Idudi road in Kibuku district. The arrests were made under the leadership of RDC Samuel Musiho, who was reportedly attacked by one of the arrested individuals using a metal bar.
This story highlights the importance of religious tolerance and respect for individual beliefs. It also underscores the need for protection and support for victims of such violence.
