Motorists woke up to massive traffic jam in Kampala and its suburbs as learners in boarding schools returned to school today.
Last week, the Ministry of Education and Sports released a new plan detailing specific back-to-school dates for boarding schools in the Kampala Metropolitan Area. According to the detailed plan learners studying from schools in Kampala and Mukono are supposed to report between Tuesday and Thursday with A-level and lower primary reporting first.
On Bombo Road, from Kawempe to Wandegeya, vehicles were moving at a snail pace. Boda Boda riders also struggled to find space to maneuver through.
At Clocktower, the traffic jam was terrible as vehicles from Nasser Road, Entebbe Road, and Nsambya could not move despite the presence of traffic police officers. There has been congestion at the clock tower in the past few months due to the construction of the Kampala Fly Over Project.
A passenger, Stella Kobusinge says she spent over two hours in traffic Jam from Nsambya to the New Taxi Park.
Jeremiah Jakwera from Kyebando says he spent more than one hour from Kyebando to the City centre. He however says that the staggered re-opening for schools in Kampala Metropolitan Area has addressed the problem of congestion.
Ronald Kavuma who was traveling from Buloba to Kampala says he spent over an hour to reach the town.
Meanwhile, several people taking the learners were seen not adhering to the Standard Operating Procedures-SOPs. Many were not wearing a mask and there were no washing hands points at the entrance of the Taxi Parks.
