More than 900 applicants are battling for the positions of porters and askaris at Kwania district local government.
In January 2022, Kwania District Service Commission advertised for jobs under 28 categories of vacant positions, which included 105 primary school teachers, 15 positions for asikaris, 15 potters and 4 office attendants among others.
According to the information pinned on Kwania District Public Noticeboard, 395 job applicants are shortlisted for the position of porters, 110 applicants shortlisted for the position of askaris, and 117 shortlisted for parish chief jobs but the commission needed less than 15 candidates in each category.
The shortlisted applicants are to commence interviews from April 12, 2022 to April 20, 2022.
Tom Odur Anang, the chairperson Kwania District Service Commission says that they are overwhelmed by the high number of job seekers who applied for various jobs. Odur said for 4 positions for office attendants they received 408 applications, 105 vacancies for teachers they have received 1,226 applications. He however, maintained that the commission will never accept bribes.
Geoffrey Alex Ogwal Adyebo, the Kwania District chairman warned job applicants against people who may intend to fleece them off their hard earn money with the promise of securing them jobs.
He explained that conmen usually take advantage of the educated unemployed youth who are desperately looking for jobs to steal from them under the guise of lobbying for them work.
According to the Africa Development Indicators report released by the World Bank, the highest percentage of the unemployed masses in Uganda is youths. About 256,700 youths can’t find jobs every year in Uganda; this according to experts is like a ticking time bomb bound to explode.
