A man identified as Charles Bazil Kintu was shot and killed by police officers while allegedly trying to set fire to Masanafu Police post located in Rubaga division. The incident is said to have occurred on the 10th of January 2022 at about 11:30pm.
Kintu was shot and injured by police officers on duty at the station, and was confirmed dead by Mulago National Referral Hospital where he had been rushed for medical attention.
A statement by the Kampala metropolitan police deputy spokesperson Luke Owoyesigire says kintu was carrying a bottle of an unidentified substance.
“One of our officers were manning the station for the night shift when they noticed a man approaching with a two-liter water bottle containing an unknown substance.” the statement reads in part.
“One of the officers then asked the man what was in the bottle and what had brought him to the Police station but he responded by pouring the substance and setting a fire.” Owoyesigire adds
“He unfortunately, got burnt in the process, and started running towards the officers, prompting one of them to shoot at him. The fire was later put out and the man was rushed to Mulago Hospital for treatment.”
Owoyesigyire also revealed that they recovered a photocopy of a National ID in the name of Kintu Charles Bazil together with a mobile phone fom the deceased and these will assist in the ongoing investigations into the matter.
