Musicians Moses Ssali also known as Bebe Cool, his counterpart Joseph Mayanja alias Chameleon and fun factory’s Bugingo Hannington have been sworn in as newly appointed Uganda National Cultural Centre (UNCC) board of trustee members.
On the list including eight members, was recently approved by Cabinet for a three years’ tenure following the expiration of the previous board’s mandate last year on June 25th, ushering in a new era of leadership and vision for the cultural landscape of Uganda by the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development
Previously, the board has been faulted by artists for not fully representing the sector nor being a reflection of their Many challenges as was spotlighted Bugingo’s poster shortly after his swearing in, “The revolution of getting Art as an industry/ sector onto the National Planning Strategy of the National plan and Budget has commenced… Let’s all keep pushing Our Art/ culture to immense heights bse no society/Nation moves forward without harnessing their Identity and civilization through Culture and Art…”””””
The board was also accused of not having musicians as representatives and yet they had the majority share in the sector
“The new board of Trustees for UNCC is a reflection of the Cultural Heritage and mirrors the demographic landscape with the young people in the majority. The new Board is comprised of big names in the Arts and Culture and we have no doubt each member will bring a unique set of skills and experiences that will contribute to the success of UNCC in fostering cultural exchange and artistic expression,” statement from the ministry reads.
The Ministry also added that it recognizes UNCC’s critical role in promoting our diverse Cultural Heritage and the new board is envisioned to provide strategic policy direction for the cultural sector, support artists’ contributions to national development, and strengthen governance within the cultural community.
The ministry was thus hopeful that the board of trustees will build on success made by the outgoing board including building on plans to establish theaters and cultural centers in the regions, encouraging and developing cultural and artistic activities, and accommodating societies, groups, and organizations with cultural, artistic, philanthropic, or educational purposes.
