Maj. Gen. Leopold Kyanda, the Uganda People’s Defense Forces-UPDF Joint Chief of Staff has paid a courtesy visit to the National Defence College in Jinja, the first of its kind in the country. He commended the commandant of the college, Maj Gen Francis Okello for a job well done.
“Within six months you have done a lot and I do encourage you to keep it up,” he said. In his remarks, Maj Gen Francis Okello noted that the plans to establish National Defence College started in 2013, which led to the establishment of up to four Task Forces to oversee the task of establishing the project.
He showed the Joint Chief of Staff the NDC camp layout on a Google map showing all the facilities including Hospital, lecture room, officers’ mess, and residences among others. The UPDF Engineering Brigade refurbished the buildings after taking them over from Uganda National Roads Authority- UNRA.
The National Defence College will serve as a think tank for the government and will attract participants at the level of One Star General, Senior officers at the rank of Colonel, and civilians in the future. The lectures will commence in January with about 20 participants affiliated with Makerere University.
