URN.Eyewitnesses say that three armed robbers traveling in a numberless Ipsum vehicle surrounded Kabenge’s retail shop on Tuesday and directed him to hand over all the money in his possession.
Kiira Region police have recovered an AK-47 rifle that is said to have been dropped by suspected robbers at a shop belonging to Victory Kabenge in Church zone cell in Northern Jinja City division.
Detectives also recovered an undisclosed number of bullets left behind by the robbers. Eyewitnesses say that three armed robbers traveling in a numberless Ipsum vehicle surrounded Kabenge’s retail shop on Tuesday and directed him to hand over all the money in his possession.
Kabenge shouted for help attracting crowds of passers-by, who physically confronted the robbers using big sticks forcing them to dump the gun at the shop and flee for dear life. Kabenge describes the suspects as three tall dark-skinned men.
He says that he bravely held one of the suspected robbers by the neck as he shouted for help. According to Kabenge, the passers-by courageously roughed up the suspects but they managed to get away.
Godfrey Kalule, the area LC 1 chairperson says that cases of aggravated robbery are increasing on a daily basis, majorly due to youth unemployment and drug abuse. Kalule wants police authorities to liaise with other responsible agencies to rehabilitate the already disgruntled youths from engaging in criminal-related activities.
Collins Kaluya, a trader within Church zone cell, says that police authorities should step up the manpower within the area so as to address security lapses.
Kiira Region police spokesperson, James Mubi says that inquiries are underway and a detailed report concerning the same shall be availed to the press after interrogating some of the key witnesses.
