Makindye Division is to fire all its support staff who do not reside within the division.
The drastic move has been revealed by Mayor Ssemwanga Godfrey Kabuzi. These support staff to lose jobs include drivers and cleaners who work at the division offices.
According to Kabuzi, the Makindye division council passed a resolution to fire all its support staff who do not reside within the division. He says in fulfillment of that resolution, the Makindye division has issued a memo to all departments at the division to lay off all support staff by 30th December so that new staff who stay within Makindye can apply for the jobs and start working in January after the Christmas holiday.
This move is meant to create job opportunities for the residents of Makindye Division who voted the current leadership into power.
Namukasa Fiona the councilor for Bunamwaya Ngobe and Kisigula says she supports the move as it will create jobs for the people of the Makindye division who can work as support staff. This she says is to give leeway to residents of Makindye to get employed.
Nalwanga Faridah Kasozi representing Mirimu cell, says that even though the firing of these staff is not enough as it doesn’t create enough jobs, she supports the move. She says there should be the creation of jobs through skilling youths and women like brick making.
But John Paul Kigozi, the councilor for Mirembe is not impressed by his colleagues’ stance and says that the move is segregative and may lead to counter segregation by other divisions rendering some people from Makindye unemployed.
