The police in Kakumiro are holding a 62-year-old man for allegedly strangling his son to death. The suspect has been identified as George Tiruraga, a resident of Kitaihuka village in Kirisa parish in Kakumiro district.
It is alleged that on December 24, 2021, at around 9 p.m, Tiruraga picked a quarrel with his wife Goretti Kasafali whom he accused of cheating on him. Kasafali fled for her dear life when the situation intensified and left behind their one-month-old baby boy.
However, when she returned home the next morning, she found that her husband had strangled their baby to death and abandoned the body inside their house. Stephen Bahati, the area LCI Chairperson says after committing the offence, Tiruraga fled to an unknown destination.
Julius Hakiza, the Albertine Region Police Spokesperson told Uganda Radio Network in an interview on Monday that the police and area residents launched a manhunt for the suspect and netted him on Sunday. He was then taken to Kakumiro Central Police Station where he is being detained on murder charges.
Hakiza says once police investigations are through, the suspect will be arraigned before the court to be charged accordingly.
