Police in Maracha District are investigating an incident in which two children from Drambu Sub County in Maracha County were knocked dead by a speeding Fuso Truck on Saturday.
According to eyewitnesses, the children aged 6 and 1 years were among hundreds of people celebrating New Year’s Day at Akua trading Center along Simbili-Oleba road in Maracha district.
The deceased who are children of Bosco Opiga the LCI Chairman of Odru village in Drambu Sub County were knocked dead on spot at around 6:00 pm on Saturday by the Fuso Lorry, which also left several other people injured. They are nursing injuries at Oleba Health Center III.
The Fuso truck Reg. No. UBH 863U was carrying football players and fans of Ayifea Trading Center for a match with Nyadri Urban FC in Nyadri town. The unidentified driver of the lorry fled after the accident but was later arrested and taken to Maracha Police Station where he is currently detained.
Lawrence Adiga, an eyewitness attributed the accident to overspeeding.
The OC Station Maracha Brian Katabalawo condemned the recklessness of the driver. He said investigations are ongoing.
The bodies of the two children were released and are being buried today at their ancestral home in Odru village.
