Furniture dealers and garage operators in Kalerwe Makerere I parish, Kawempe Division are counting losses following a fire outbreak.
The fire that started from Wova Auto Garage on Tuesday at 7:00 pm also razed four furniture workshops close to the garage, leaving six motor vehicles burnt and all furniture in the workshops.
Kalim Jemba of the owner of Wova Auto garage, says that the four furniture workshops had sofa-set chairs valued at 50 Million Shillings were all destroyed. He said although the fire brigade from Kawempe Police station arrived on time, nothing was saved.
Richard Ssenaburya, one of the furniture shop owners said that over 100 people who have been operating in the workshop and the garage have been left jobless. He is calling for support from the government and all well-wishers.
Moses Kigozi the Chairperson of Mini Triangle Zone, said among other properties that were destroyed included 8 Sewing Machines that were donated to them by president Museveni in 2016.
He, however, applauded the Police fire and rescue team for the quick response, which managed to stop the fire from causing further damage.
Luke Owoyesigyire the Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police spokesperson has said that although Investigations are on to ascertain the exact cause of the fire, the preliminary finding shows that the fire was caused by a short circuit.
