UPDF have shot dead a suspected Karimojong cattle rustler in an operation to recover guns.
The incident that took place on Thursday evening at Koblulin in Napak district left one Anti Stock Theft Unit personnel also injured.
Michael Longole the Karamoja regional Spokesperson identified the injured person as Alfred James Oriebo attached to Koblulin ASTU detach.
Longole explains that the joint force comprising of the police and army had set up an ambush against cattle rustlers.
He said the injured officer has been rushed to Kapelebyong health center IV for treatment in the Kapelebyong district.
“We didn’t manage to recover any gun because other warriors managed to run in disarray with guns,” he said.
According to Longole, this is the second incident where police personnel has been injured by Karamojong warriors.
Two weeks ago one policeman was shot and injured by the rustlers during the operation to recover the guns.
Moses Okello a the chairperson peace committee of the Apeitolim sub-county in Napak district said the rustlers are acquiring more skills to continue raiding animals and appealed to the forces to seal off the corridors used by rustlers.
“We still have corridors used by these rustlers to sneak and carry out raids how I wish the forces could seal off these areas,” he said.
Sarah Nakut another resident of Arengepua village in Apeitolim sub-county in Napak district proposed heavy deployment especially in the border corridors of Teso and Napak saying the rustlers are likely to shift to start raiding in the Teso region.
