At least 69 chicken have been poisoned to death in Ogony Cell, Kweyo Ward, Bardege –Layibi Division in Gulu City by an unknown person between Saturday 5th and Monday 7th.
This has raised concern among the locals who say the person behind the act could later begin poisoning people instead.
Emmanuel Acaye, a resident of Ogony Cell in Bardege –Layibi Division told URN in an interview that out of the 200 hundred birds he is raring for commercial purposes, 47 have been killed by poison in the last three days and that the number is likely going to increase since many others are getting weaker.
According to Acaye, his chicken and those of his neighbors ate the remains of a chicken that was disposed of near his home, and they began dying one after another. He disclosed that the chicken would begin passing out foam from their beaks, and pass out bloody waste before they die.
Acaye also revealed that two pigs and a dog belonging to one of his neighbors also died after eating the remains of the poisoned chicken.
Lucy Akech Ayaa, the LCI of Ogony Cell in Bardege –Layibi Division says after the locals raised concerns, they contacted a veterinary officer who examined the remains of the chicken and found that they ingested a poisonous substance that killed them.
Akech says such a thing had never happened before in their area and that they fear the person might begin poisoning water sources. She added that all the remains of the chicken were buried while others were dumped in latrines for the safety of other animals as well as the people.
Brian Openyrwot, the Councilor for Kweyo Ward who also doubles as the Deputy Speaker for Bardege –Layibi Division condemned the act saying they are going to hold a community meeting on Tuesday in a bid to try and identify the alleged perpetrator. He says once caught, the person shall be brought to book.
