The Police have arrested two teachers of Pachua Pakuba P.7 School in Mucwini West Sub County on allegations of persistent absenteeism and drinking alcohol during class hours. Nelson Mandel Oyat and Robert Omony were both arrested on Monday while drunk.
The Mucwini West Sub County LCIII Chairperson Richard Komakech Pa’Yilibo says the arrest follows complaints from the school headteacher over the grave misconduct by the teachers.
According to Komakech since the school term opened last month the teachers have absconded from duty and spent most of their time drinking in the nearby Pudo trading centre. Komakech adds that the two teachers had made it a habit to report to school to sign the attendance book and then go to the trading centre to drink.
Paska Atoo, the headteacher says that they have received several complaints from concerned parents who said that their children were not being taught.
According to Atoo, the persistent concerns from the parents implored the teachers to appear before the disciplinary Committee of the school management committee (SMC) and Parents and Teachers Associations (PTA) last week.
Atoo says the persistent absenteeism and drunkenness of the teachers had compromised the teaching of pupils.
The Acting Kitgum District Education Officer Fred Owot describes the incident as unfortunate saying stern disciplinary action will be taken against the two teachers who acted in an unethical manner and contrary to the public service standing orders.
According to Owot, such acts of misconduct by the teaching profession can attract disciplinary measures issued by the reward and sanction committee of the district including interdiction and dismissal.
