Countryside Environmental Conservation-CECO Uganda, a Non-Governmental Organisation involved in conserving the environment in Rwenzori region has so far planted over 5000 different tree species in the Karangura sub-county, kabarole district since last year November 2021.
Tadeo Mwikiriza, the Programs Director CECO Uganda disclosed this during the launch of the 1 million tree campaign at Karangura sub-county headquarters under the theme “Restoring fragile eco-systems in the Rwenzori region along the River Mpanga catchment”.
Mwikiriza told our reporter that their plan is also to conserve other degraded water streams within the region. He explains that they selected Rwenzori region because of its worrying climate changes stemming from environmental degradation, which needs immediate attention.
She has asked the public to continue embracing the campaign in order to restore the degraded areas. Samuel Kiiza, CECO Administrator, said that the degraded areas of Karambi, Karago, Kyeganywa in North-Division, Fort-Portal Tourism City have also benefited from this offer, adding that other communities within the region will also be covered.
Elkanah Kahuzo, the Karangura Sub-County LC III Chairperson appreciated CECO-Uganda for the commendable job and asked for more trees, saying his area is seriously degraded because of stone mining. The campaign will last for 5years in Kabarole, Kasese, Bunyangabu, Kyenjojo, Kyegegwa, Kamwenge, Budibugyo, Kitagwenda and Ntoroko districts.
