More Congolese asylum seekers have entered Kasese District after fleeing fresh attacks by the Allied Democratic Forces-ADF in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo-DRC.
On Thursday an estimated 1,500 Congolese -DRC had arrived in the District from 500 who were registered on Monday.
The group comprises mostly women and children from the areas of Masamba, Nobili, Kakororo and the surroundings.
The refugees are being registered and screened by the UPDF, Police and local council authorities at Kisebere Primary School in Kitholhu Sub County, bordering DRC.
Emmanuel Kule Maliba, the LC III Chairperson of Kitholhu sub-county says the number of the refugees could be much high since some have preferred to stay with their relatives.
According to Kule, the asylum seekers say the situation in DRC is tense, adding that hundreds of people have been killed since the rebels attacked local villages on Sunday.
The chairperson has appealed to government to support the local authorities to manage and relocate the asylum seekers in a designated place.
Lt. Joe Walusimbi, the Kasese RDC says they are liaising with the Prime Minister’s office to ensure all the asylum seekers are resettled in one place.
But he warned that all asylum seekers that local authorities will not be responsible should anything happen to any asylum seeker who has not been registered by authorities.
