URN.Henry Ddamba, the Buhweju district Chief Administrative Officer interdicted Kananura directing him to vacate the office with immediate effect on Tuesday to pave way for investigations.
The Office of the Inspectorate of Government has taken over investigations of the interdicted Buhweju district Principal Human Resource officer Nicholas Kananura.
Henry Ddamba, the Buhweju district Chief Administrative Officer interdicted Kananura directing him to vacate the office with immediate effect on Tuesday to pave way for investigations.
Kananura is allegedly accused of overpaying some staff on the District payroll and the existence of ghost employees.
Damba alleges that Kananura who was the sole data entrant on the district payroll will be responsible for these anomalies if at all they are proved.
However, Frederick Okech the IG Regional Manager Mbarara says his office choose to take over the case after receiving a notification of fraud and corruption from the office of the Chief Administration officer.
Okech says their focus of the investigation is around the entire payroll and the payment register for the district noting that they are commencing work on April 25th, 2022.
Kananura was directed to stay away from office premises unless called upon and not to leave the country without permission during the time of interdiction.
When Uganda Radio Network – URN contacted the Chief Administrative officer Damba confirmed that IGG’s office will investigate the matter since it is responsible for investigating corruption matters.
Apollo Kakonge Lee, the director of Western Ankole Civil Society Forum (WASCOF) welcomed the idea noting that districts as they are known to Civil society cannot investigate and prosecute such matters but the IGG has all the capacity.
He says corruption in the Buhweju district is at alarming levels and had reported the issues to the IGG although the action was not forthcoming.
Kakonge said he is happy that the IGG’s office is handling this matter because otherwise, the wrong people might remain in the Buhweju district office.
