The Police in Soroti have commenced night operations to rid the city of wrong elements engaged in criminal acts. The operations following the killing of 25- year- old Esther Aluko, a market vendor in Soroti on Wednesday night.
Her lifeless body was found in the Golf Course Play Ground, a few meters away from the Soroti City headquarters, which also neighbors Soroti City West Division Police headquarters. The police findings indicate that the victim was walking back to her residence in Majengo ward in Soroti City West Division at night and was intercepted by assailants who sexually assaulted her before stabbing her to death.
Aluko has been working for Sarah Akwii at Soroti Main Market. The day she met her death, it had rained heavily in the evening before Aluko embarked on her journey back home. Information from market vendors in Soroti indicates that Aluko preferred to walk back home even when her boss provided Shillings 2,000 for boda.
Although the Police arrested two men in relation to the incident on Thursday, they conducted an operation in the city suburbs that resulted in 21 arrests. Oscar Gregg Ageca, the East Kyoga Regional Police Spokesman, says the operations were conducted past midnight in various hangouts in the city. Ageca said that those arrested were found with opium and were locked up at Soroti Central Police Station.
“We had an operation in the city center where we arrested 21 people who are suspected to be terrorizing people in the city. They were nubbed from Town Talks, Independence Ground, and Lions Club with opium exhibits. We are processing their files now to take them to Court”, he said in a text.
On the Wednesday murder, Ageca said that they have arrested a driver from Lale Sub County, Joseph Emimu, 28, and Sam Emwoyu, 26, a resident of Tubur Sub County- all in Soroti district to help with the investigations. The duo was picked with the help of the Police Dog that was deployed at the scene.
Ageca says that the postmortem report confirms the victim was raped before she was killed. He adds that samples have been taken to the government analytical laboratory for further investigations. Cases of murder by stabbing at night are on the rise in Soroti.
Last month, two people were killed by stabbing in Nakatunya ward after unknown assailants attacked the victims on two different occasions. The assailants, according to the Police take advantage of the dark streets to execute their criminal acts.
