Police in the Kigezi sub-region have raised a red flag over the high cases of domestic violence. Between 2 to 4 cases of domestic violence are registered at every police station in the region daily. Haji Ibrahim Saiga, the Kigezi Region Police commander says that whereas the region has low criminal cases, domestic violence cases have remained high.
The latest case occurred on August 13, 2022, when Captain Claver Bagabe, the Coordinator of Operation Wealth Creation in charge of Bufumbira East constituency in Kisoro district committed suicide by hanging after a woman he was cohabiting with abandoned him and went off with another man following a disagreement.
Speaking during the piping of 15 police officers in the Kigezi region who are among 773 officers that were promoted early this month at a function held at Kirigime guest house on Tuesday afternoon in Kabale district, Saiga said domestic violence escalated from the lockdown to date. Saiga said that during the lockdown triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic, husbands, wives, and children stayed together for so long and got fed up with each other.
Elly Maate, the Kigezi region police spokesperson says that in addition to registering between 2 to 4 cases of domestic violence at every police station, they also register cases of death resulting from the same in all districts in the region including Kabale, Rubanda, Kisoro, Kanungu, Rukungiri, and Rukiga on a weekly basis. He explains that without others joining hands, especially religious leaders with the police to fight the vice, police may not do much to reduce the cases anymore.
