At least 90 suspected criminals were arrested and one gun recovered in operations by Kampala Metropolitan Police over the weekend. The suspects were picked up from Katale, Kevina-Nsabya zones, and St Benedict-Kabalagala in Makindye Division.
Others were apprehended around the city square. The operations were conducted under the command of Steven Tanui, the Kampala Metropolitan Police Commander. A senior Police officer at Katwe Station, which is holding several suspects, said the detainees include 4 notorious gang members who were found with an empty pistol they were using to threaten their victims in Kevina zone, one of the criminal hubs.
He said the operation resulted from several complaints by motorists, pedestrians, and residents about the increasing cases of phone snatching, motor vehicle breaking, and night burglaries. Police said several motorists and pedestrians have been attacked around Nsambya road, Clock tower, Calendar to Harsh Petrol station section, Entebbe Road, Katwe-Kinyoro, Kabalagala, and city square.
“We got information from the local leaders about some of these criminal herbs, but among those included four armed thugs, the gun was empty, which they have been using in threatening the victims,” an officer said. Some of the suspects at Katwe Police station have been identified as Richard Atuhaire, Sukura Kabengana, Richard Tumwesigye and John Ahimbise. Others are Mutonyanga, Ratif Amanyire, Moses Lubega, Clovis Musubuzi, Emmanuel Bisuru, Bright Ankunda, and Moses Katongole.
Police spokesperson Fred Enanga, says the Makindye operation led to the arrest of eleven suspects but the city swoop led to the arrest of about 80 suspects on Saturday and Sunday combined. He says that of the 80, 16 were caught red-handed snatching phones at city square just next to the Central Police Station-CPS Kampala during the rush hours.
Enanga says just like how police dismantled the Northern bypass criminal gangs, Police and its sister agencies are willing to clean up the whole Kampala Metropolitan Policing area. “As the joint security agencies we’re aware of dangers and threats caused by criminal groups in our area, so we shall continue conducting very robust operations to crackdown gang crimes, we cannot allow for such criminal sanctuaries to exist within Kampala Metropolitan Areas,” Enanga stated.
