Security personnel in Bukwo District on Friday intercepted cattle that were stolen from Kenya.
The five cows were stolen from Kitale and transported through the border route to Sironko district.
Samuel MpimbazaHashaka, the Resident District Commissioner Bukwo says that they were tipped by security personnel in Kenya intelligence about the missing cows.
“When we got intelligence from our counterparts in Kenya we immediately swung in action to start following the animals and we got them being driven to be slaughtered, “he said. He said the animals will be handed over to Kenya authorities on Saturday.
According to Hashaka, most of the thieves fear stealing animals within the region adding that they cross and steal animals in Kenya. He said the culprits managed to escape arrest.
Last month the leaders in Bukwo and Kenya held a meeting and agreed to work together in recovering animals stolen from Uganda and Kenya.
Moses Chemusto a resident of Amanang sub-county said the theft of livestock had increased in the district adding that many people have lost animals to thieves within Sebei but claiming it is the Karamojong.
“Much as the Karamojong also cross to steal animals in Sebei but for the last two months, the Karamojong have not crossed to raid animals in Sebei instead it’s our own Sebei people stealing animals while claiming it’s the Karamojong,’’ he said.
Joseph Sikoria another resident wondered why the security failed to apprehend the thieves adding that they might intensify the theft.
