Village Health Team (VHT’s) in Wakiso district have cautioned the police and local leaders to monitor the rising acts of child abuse against Persons With disabilities.
The VHT’s revealed this at the opening ceremony of Aruwe Centre for Health in Wakiso town which was commissioned by the district leaders. This facility is built to give health attention to people with disability and teenager mothers.
The Village Heath Teams say the parents of children with disability should monitor and protect their children in all the areas they operate and help them to associate with others without being harmed.
Furthermore they have raised the issue of discriminating the people with disability on various issues including employment saying that it has become too much for them.
The government has been urged to intervene on the issues concerning persons living with albinism because of their expensive day-to-day life for example the lotions they use to protect their skins against sunlight which are too expensive something which has led many of them to die.
It is because of this that ARUWE, an organization that fights for the rights of people with disabilities, women, children, and teenage mothers, together with the One Girl Organisation joined forces to construct the Aruwe Centre for Health to give health services to these vulnerable groups of people and also educate them on how to sustain themselves amidst the many challenges they face.
According to Mabel Mirembe the chairman ARUWE, the idea was born out of findings that many teenage mothers and people with disabilities were not being given attention at hospitals something which leads some to lose their lives.
Betina Nantege, the deputy chairperson of Wakiso district commissioned the opening of this health facility and vowed on behalf of the district leadership to render all their support.
