The cleaners at Mbale Regional Referral Hospital have laid down their tools protesting nonpayment for the last three months. Some of the cleaners who spoke to URN on condition of anonymity say that they are entitled to 100,000 monthly but have gone without pay for August, June, and July.
According to the striking cleaners, their pleas to the authorities to clear their pay have not yielded positive results, which has promoted them to lay down their tools. But Bruno Ojuno, the Administrator of Mbale Regional Referral Hospital denies claims that the cleaners demand three months’ pay. According to Ojuno, the cleaners only demand payment for July and August 2022.
He also revealed that the hospital contracted a private person he only identified as Bwayo to recruit, offer the cleaning services at the hospital and pay the workers. Ojuno told URN that the hospital has already intervened and paid the 42 cleaners for one month and some of them have resumed work.
