More than 60 families in Wansisa LC1, Kihuna Parish Kakindo Sub County in Kakumiro district are out in the cold after heavy rains destroyed their homes.
The heavy rain that was characterized by strong winds and hailstorm started at around 6pm on Wednesday and lasted for close to four hours.
The heavy rains blew off the rooftops of several houses in the area leaving several families out in the cold. It also destroyed several hectares of garden crops including beans, cassava, rice, banana plantations maize among others.
Joseph Lule, the Wansisa LCI Chairperson Wansisa says the heavy downpour has caused so much suffering to residents in the area calling for immediate government intervention. He says the area could be hit by an outbreak of famine following the destruction of garden crops.
Emmanuel Agaba, the director Better Nursery and Primary school explains that the rooftop of the school dormitory for Boys’ section was blown off compelling the school to send pupils back home since they do not have where to accommodate them. He has appealed for government intervention.
John Ngabirano, a businessman at Wansisa trading center says the heavy rain caused a lot of destruction to their businesses after their houses were submerged by floods resulting from the rain.
Micheal Yombo, the LC3 Chairperson Kakindo sub county says the magnitude of the destruction caused by the heavy rain is unbearable adding that they have embarked on the process of registering all the affected residents so that their list can be sent to the district disaster management committee for quick intervention. He has also appealed to the office of the Prime Minister to quickly respond by sending food relief to the affected residents.
According to Yombo, the massive destruction caused by the heavy rain is partly as a result of high level of environmental degradation in the area.
Mackline Namiyingo, the kakumiro district environment officer says there is high rate of environmental degradation by area residents affecting weather patterns in most parts of the district.
In March 2021, more than 50 families in Kiryanga and Paacwa sub-counties in Kagadi district were left out in the cold after heavy rains devastated their homes.
The heavy rain that was characterized by strong winds and hailstorm caused massive destruction to houses, churches and garden crops.
The most affected areas were Kikonda, Nyamiringa and Kiseegu in Kiryanga Sub County and Kinyakairu, Kigunda A and B in Paacwa Sub County among others.
