Acholi Sub-region has received four billion Shillings for the construction and rehabilitation of six lower health facilities in Nwoya, Amuru, Gulu, and Omoro districts.
The construction and rehabilitation will be undertaken by the Health Ministry through the Belgian Development agency, Enabel with funding from USAID. The facilities are Atiak Health Center IV in Amuru District, Alero Health Center III, and Nwoya District Vaccine Store in Nwoya District.
Others are Loyo Ajonga Health Center III, Lalogi Health Center III in Omoro District, and Awach Health Center IV in Gulu District.
Speaking at the commissioning of the construction works on Thursday in Alero Sub-county, Nwoya District, Dr. Monica Imi, the Intervention Manager of Health Project at Enable says the funding will help to improve health services.
She however called on the leaders in the region to protect the facilities and ensure it achieves the intended purposes of improving health care services.
At Alero Health Center III, the construction of an inpatient ward was commissioned to help in accommodating patients visiting the facility.
Lieven Callewaert, the Acting Resident Representative Enable Uganda noted that there is a need to build trust and commitment with the various stakeholders in the region so that the intervention doesn’t end in vain. He says the sole purpose of the project is to help improve the lives of people in the region and the country as a whole.
The Acting District Health Officer Nwoya, Isaac Okello Wonyima says the district has infrastructure gaps in most of the health facilities but notes that the lack of an in-patient ward at Alero Health Center III was a big concern.
He says the intervention in constructing an inpatient ward at Alero Sub-county and the vaccine store in the district is a big boost given the limited funding from the government.
The Nwoya Resident District Commissioner Christopher Omara says the support extended to the health department in the district will go a long way in improving health service delivery in the region.
Omara however called on leaders and other stakeholders to closely monitor the facilities and ensure competent workers are employed to run them.
The ongoing construction and rehabilitation works will see the benefitting facilities get a new neonatal intensive care Unit at Lalogi Health Center IV IN Omoro District, a new blood bank, and expansion and standardization of the existing theater at Awach Health Center IV in Gulu district.
