Floods have washed away a road divert on Najjera – Buwate road in Kira Municipality, Wakiso District disrupting traffic and other activities in the area. The floods followed the Monday morning downpour. According to information from residents and local leaders, the floods first submerged the road on one side before washing away the newly completed divert section on the Nalubaaga channel.
The channel that borders Najjeera and Buwate villages, is lined up for construction under the new arrangement for the construction of the Kasangati – Kungu- Buwate – Najjera Sections. Dennis Egesa, a florist in the buffer area of the channel, said the floods also destroyed their flower and tree seedlings worth unspecified millions of Shillings. Egesa said that some of the seedlings were taken away while others were covered by marram from the new road works.
“We came here in the morning and found the washed and part of our seedlings were covered with soil and another part in water. We have lost business because every plant counts,” he said. Motorists and residents in the area attributed the flooding to the developments in violation of proper building plans and the environment.
Muhamood Jjingo, the Vice Chairperson of Buwate village said that the flooding forced them to divert traffic to Kungu and Kyanja roads. He said that the flooding came hardly a day after the works on the road divert were completed to allow the construction of the culvert. Jjingo said that works on the channel are part of the ongoing road works to tarmac the Najjera- Buwate up to Kasangati, a move said to solve the protracted flood problem on the channel.
He said that the channel has been a danger to peoples’ lives whenever it rains but optimistic that the construction would solve the mess. URN
