The highest decision making organ of Makerere university has resolved for the University to resume elections for guild president in October.
The University Council suspended the Students Guild Elections that were supposed to take place on 15th July 2022 following chaotic and violent campaigns that resulted into the death of a Uganda Christian University (UCU) student who had been a supporter of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) camp on election eve.
In a Friday meeting of the University council, the university leadership resolved that the students Guild constitution should be reviewed under under Section 69(1)(a) of Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act (UOTIA).
This therefore means that a Constitutional Review Commission shall be voted for through universal suffrage in every College and Hall of residence.
This commission will comprise of two students, one male and another must be a female, from each college, one representative from the male halls of residence, two representatives from the female halls of residence, two representatives from the Jinja campus and two representatives of students with disabilities, one female and the other male.
Management pledged to provide accommodation to all members of this commission on the University campus while they take on their responsibilities.
Further more, the university Management said it will provide the members with facilitation for living expenses at a rate approved by the University council.
The elections of the new students’ guild will commence in October 2022.
The University Management is expected to develop a proposal to manage security at the University which will guarantee the safety of everyone.
