Police have recovered a lifeless body of an unidentified boy from an abandoned fishpond in Luubu village in Bukabooli Sub County in Mayuge district. Herdsmen sighted the body that was floating in the pond on Monday evening while watering their animals and notified the residents, who in turn alerted the police.
Police retrieved the body at took it to Mayuge health center IV mortuary awaiting postmortem. Betty Achom, a resident of the area suspects that the deceased’s relatives might be part of the illegal settlers occupying the neighboring forest reserve.
“Our village is located next to a forest reserve, which is equally home to several illegal settlers from different parts of the country, most of whom are largely pastoralists. I highly suspect that this boy might have been left behind by his relatives from such communities,” she said.
George Masanga, another resident, says that most of the illegal settlers are reluctant to register their existence with the local authorities, which makes it hard to trace them in case of incidents such as sudden death, and theft of property, among others.
Busoga East Regional Police spokesperson, Diana Nandawula, says a team of detectives has been tasked to find the deceased’s relatives.
