Lightning has struck dead a primary school teacher in Kiyombya Sub County, Bunyangabu district. The deceased, Annet Nyakake was a teacher at St. Andrew Primary school in Nyamiseke Parish. The thunderbolt also injured Grace Nyamata, a primary six pupil at the same school.
Patrick Mugenyi, the school head teacher of St. Andrew Primary school, said the deceased was moving out of class on Thursday when she was struck by lightning during a heavy downpour. He says that the pupil was rushed to the hospital for medical examination and treatment. Amir Kiiza, the area village chairperson, says that lightning struck several times, and shortly they received information that a teacher had died.
He also says that many schools in the sub-county don’t have lightning arresters, which expose the population to thunderbolt strikes. Lightning strikes are common in Bunyangabu district. In June, lightning injured three children in Kabonero Sub County while returning from school in rain.
