Ugandans based in the United States have thronged streets of Washington DC in protest over the arrival of President Museveni in the country.
Museveni is expected to land in the US a few hours from now to take part in the US-Africa leaders’ summit organized by US president Joe Biden.
Ms Remmy Bahati, a US based Uganda journalist says through her official social media handles Twitter some Ugandans have boarded flights to come and take part in the protests.
Protests are hinged on the purported escalation of human rights violations in the country indicating that Ugandan government officials need to be isolated until they produce accountability for the torture, abductions among other cases.
Last week, opposition camped in Nairobi, capital of Kenya demanding accountability of the infamous protests that ensued on November 18-19, 2020. The protests claimed 54 lives of Ugandans as National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine in the presidential elections was arrested in Luuka District before he was driven to the dreaded Nalufenya prison in Jinja District.
On every occasion that Bobi Wine has presented before the foreign countries, he has always demanded that the people funding the government of Uganda are accomplices in the what he calls murder of the citizens.
For more than six decades, the US government has been funding the Ugandan security and other sectors to a tune of $400 per year (about Shs1.5 trillion).
Hillary Taylor, a Ugandan opposition activist in the United States posted a photo of protestors on the streets thanking Washington police for allowing them to protest.
“Washington DC police protected our First Amendment. The police (behind us) blocked the road for us to protest in its center against the ruthless junta of despot Museveni.” Taylor said adding
“In Uganda, the right to protest & freedom of speech are replaced by fear of speech.”
President Museveni is one of US’s most reliable allies in Africa who has supported missions in Somalia, Central African Republic, Dr Congo among other peace keeping deals.
