Fikiri Brown Joseph, a Global bus driver, was arrested yesterday evening by traffic officers of Kyengera along Kampala-Masaka highway over breaching one of the road rules as he used his mobile phone to send messages while driving.
According to a tweet by the Uganda Police force around 8pm last night, Global Bus registration number UBB 985M is the vehicle Fikiri was in charge of before the arrest yet he also possessed an expired drivers badge.
“He’s being held at Kyengera Police Station,” added the Uganda Police.
This happens a few days after the Minister of Works and Transport Gen Katumba Wamala recognized the rise of road crashes which claimed over 80 lives including those of Serere Member of Parliament and his wife through the festive season and left over 250 people with serious injuries.
Fikiri became the second long route driver to be detained in less than 24 hours for the same case as Tenywa Philip of YY coaches who was caught by the police head quarters officers in Nateete after being recorded on video by a concerned passenger.
It should be noted that long route drivers are handled more keenly because most of the road accidents if not all have been seen on highways or long route roads away from the capital.
