The Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) have said 17 National Unity Platform (NUP) supporters are still missing with investigations that have been ongoing for the last two months.
This follows the commission investigation that started last month when the commission went out to establish the whereabouts of 25 NUP supporters who went missing after the political party tabled the names before them.
The commission says that they are still investigating the whereabouts of the 17 other NUP people, these include; Mr.John Bosco Kibalama, Mr.Ssemuddu Micheal, Mr Damulira John, Mr Mbabazi Moses aka Kawenja, Mr Nalumoso Vicent,Mr Lukwago Martin, Mr Kanata Muhammad, Mr Ssempijja Yuda , Mr Musisi Mbowa, Mr Kirya Peter,Mr Wangolo Shafick , Mr Zimula Denis, Mr Luwemba Musitafa,Mr Ssesaazi Isma,Mr Kisembo Godfrey,Mr Kasumba George and Mr Baguma Joseph and then a one Mubiru Hassan whose status was not established due to the next of kin’s contacts being unreachable.
“Investigations into this matter are ongoing and the commission urges anyone with information that maybe useful to the investigation to avail it in order to facilitate the investigation process,” a statement released on Thursday January 19 2023.
The Human Rights Commissions said that they have discovered that seven people out of the 25 have since been released n December and others have been charged and remanded .These include; Mr. Kavuma Jamshid, Mr Sonko Haruna Badru, Mr Abdu Bayani Babu, Mr.Godfrey Kirumira Marvin,Mr Ahumuza Patrick,Mr Muleme Steven.
“Out of the seven persons who were released , three were charged with murder and are still honoring their police bond requirement by reporting to Kireka CID while four others were arraigned in court and charged with malicious damage to property. They were granted bail and currently living in their homes with their families. They were scheduled to report back to court on January 17 2023.”
In November Human Rights Commission petitioned the NUP asking for the names of the people they had claimed were missing and had been missing for more than two years .NUP answered back and tabled a 15 member list and said they are still finding details to others ,to date the party has since said that many of their people started missing before, during and after the 2021 general elections.
