Speakers who represent the five divisions in Kampala District and Wakiso District have been arrested as they attempted to march to Parliament of Uganda to petition the Speaker Anitah Among seeking the release of National Unity Platform (NUP) supporters who are still incarcerated since their arrest before, during and after the 2021 elections.
Mr Luke Owoyesigire Deputy Spokesperson Kampala Metropolitan Police said the four leaders were arrested near the main gate of the Parliament of Uganda and detained at Central Police Station Kampala on charges of unlawful procession.
“Yes we have arrested these four on charges of unlawful procession and we have detained them at Central Police Station,” Mr Owoyesigire said in an interview.
Arrested Speakers include; Najja Nasif -Wakiso Municipality, Hamuza Kasozi –Nansana Municipality, Akampulira Haris –Kawempe Municipality and Charles Luba –Makindye Municipality.
The speakers were matching with burner with all the names of the political prisoners and words “free political prisoners” with chains allover their arms chanting, “We are tired of the misrule in our country, we are tired of having a parliament that doesn’t care about its people who are rotting in jails. We are tired of the law makers who continue to put laws in place that are not favorable to the common person, these people have tried to apply for bail but all in vain.”
