A team from the office of the Speaker’s office spent a better part of the day at the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) as they took back iron sheets that they had promised to return which had been blocked due to an exchange on the prices of the items being inflated.
Mr Joseph Sabiti, the Speaker’s spokesperson confirmed to this publication this evening that the iron sheets had been finally accepted by OPM.
“There were procedural issues to be followed and the coordination. Then the CID (criminal investigative department of police) office had to confirm that it was the quality and the quantity but finally, all was put in place and we are now fine,” Mr Sabiti said in an interview.
Documents seen by this publication indicate that the cost of the 500 iron sheets that Speaker Anita Annet Among received should have cost her Shs35m basing on the rate of Shs71, 000 that the OPM gave.
Some of the sources that this publication talked to indicate that Shs71, 000 is on the far end and that most of the stores around Kampala can give the same quality of iron sheets from OPM can be found at anywhere between Shs35, 000 and Shs45, 000.
But the receipts for Ms Among indicate that each iron sheet cost her about Shs42, 450 each which brings the total cost to Shs21.2m and another of Shs14.7m which were both paid in the middle of last month.
“I have taken a conscious decision to deliver 500 iron sheets to your stores in Namanve. This delivery is to compensate for the iron sheets of a similar quantity that were delivered in Bukedea District in 2022,” in part read the delivery statement which was stamped by the officials at OPM.
All contacts of the known OPM officials went unanswered by press time as our effort to get a comment from them them became futile.
