President Yoweri Museveni will preside over the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Summit today at Mestil Hostel in Kampala, the Minister for Justice and Constitutional Affairs Mr Nobert Mao has said while addressing the press.
He also stated that the summit is intended for legal practitioners, the judiciary, and all those who need to settle disputes in order to assist them develop the essential abilities in arbitration, mediation, negation, and many more.
“We believe alternative dispute resolution will ease the pressure because our court systems are clogged with very many cases and there is virtual traffic jam in the Judiciary,” Mao noted.
Legal experts have applauded the government’s decision to implement an ADR strategy in Uganda. They claim that the policy is long overdue and would assist to encourage the use of alternative dispute resolution in the country.
Dr. John Ruhangira, the Executive Director of the ADR Institute of Uganda said, “The ADR Summit is a significant event for the ADR community in Uganda. It is an opportunity for us to share our experiences and learn from each other, and it is a chance for the government of Uganda to demonstrate its commitment to promoting ADR.”
Over 500 ADR practitioners from around the world are anticipated to attend the summit. It is a significant event for the ADR community in Uganda and around the world, and it provides an opportunity to demonstrate the most recent trends in ADR and its role in dispute resolution.
According to a 2022 report by the Uganda Law Society, there were an estimated 200,000 cases pending in the High Court of Uganda alone.
