Ugandan Swimmer Larry Feni won a gold medal at the ongoing Special Olympics World Games in Berlin, Germany. This is Uganda’s first medal at the games which kicked off on Saturday, June 17, 2023, at Berlin Olympic Stadium. Larry finished ahead of Hungary’s Varga Mate and Andrii Karasychenko from Ukraine in 50 meters Breaststroke Level A.
The voting happened at the Uganda Sports Press Association (USPA) monthly assembly on July 3, 2023 at the Imperial Royale Hotel, Kampala.
To win the Nile Special USPA sports personality for June, Larry beat Cricket Cranes who won the inaugural Continental T20 after defeating the hosts Kenya by just one run. Jacob Kiplimo for finishing second at the Oslo Diamond League with a time of 12:41.73 making the fifth-fastest time ever recorded at the competition.
The tireless efforts of the rally crew of Yasin Nasser and Ali Katumba for winning the Kabalenga Rally in Hoima were also recognized.
Irene Nakalembe won the 66th Asantehene Open at the Royal Golf Club Kumasi for her first professional win and four days later Finished second in the 23rd Open Cote Ivoire Final ladies.
At the Assembly, Larry Feni’s coach, Ezra Kalari scooped the USPA Supportive/Assist award an award presented to the person that works tooth and nail to ensure a sports personality achieves something in the respective competitions.
The Silverbacks gathered a total number of 200 points to win the Young Talent Award for qualifying for the FIBA Africa U16 Championship in Tanzania. They beat Victoria Pearl’s 15-year-old Lorna Anyait to win the award.
Celebrated journalist Allan Darren Kyeyune of Nation Media and Apio Nicole of Next Media won the maiden Plascon- USPA Media awards in Print and Broadcast respectively.
The 2021 and 2022 joint Nile Special annual Gala will be held on September 16th, 2023. The program was confirmed by the USPA president, Moses Alsayed Lubega on Monday, 3rd July 2023 at the annual monthly assembly.
“All the necessary features to host the event of that nature have been actualized,” the president added.
“The numbers, the guests here and across the borders, the colors, the partnership for broadcast, and the accolades have been sealed. So what a way to celebrate two years of sports exhibition in one,” he happily told the members.
The next USPA monthly assembly will happen on August 7, 2023.
