The Ministry of Health has granted official clearance to the Uganda Police Forensic Laboratory to continue its vital Forensic DNA testing services, in line with its mandated responsibilities.
With this approval, the Forensic Laboratory situated at Naguru Police Headquarters joins the list of three gazetted facilities for DNA testing relationships.
“The clearance of the Forensic DNA Lab is a monumental and crucial stride, significantly bolstering the police’s investigative capabilities, while assuming a central role in crime solving, disaster victim identification, and counter-terrorism efforts,” emphasized Enanga Fred, the Police Spokesperson.
The introduction of DNA testing technology holds unparalleled advantages, being scientifically accurate and less susceptible to disputes compared to traditional eyewitness accounts.
Most significantly, it has mitigated major setbacks in delivering justice for crime victims, as it corroborates witness and survivor statements with compelling scientific evidence.
Enanga expressed said that the laboratory has the capabilities of the DNA and Forensic Testing Service, highlighting the laboratory’s state-of-the-art technology and comprehensive facilities, enabling a wide spectrum of forensic DNA testing services. These services encompass critical functions, such as dead body identification, DNA paternity and maternity testing, sibling and kinship testing for criminal investigations, immigration DNA testing, cell line authentication, and DNA profiling.
“Our DNA and Forensic Testing Service has a laboratory equipped with state-of-the-art technology and facilities to perform a broad range of forensic DNA testing services for evidential material in support of investigations by police,” Mr. Enanga Fred elaborated.
The Forensic Laboratory’s collaboration with Medical Officers from the Ministry of Health underscores its unwavering commitment to adhering to international standards in handling evidential material for DNA analysis.
Enanga emphasized, “The Forensic Laboratory will work in conjunction with Medical Officers from the Ministry of Health, ensuring impeccable identification, collection, packaging, storage, and transportation of evidential material.”
