Kisugu resident, Jennifer Nambiru almost killed her three children aged 7,6,2 last night at around 8:20 pm in Upper Lake Side Zone Kisugu Parish, Makindye division.
Nambiru allegedly set fire to her house plus property aiming at burning her children to death since she had locked them inside as well according to the Police press release by Deputy Public Relations Officer Kampala Metropolitan Police Luke Owoyesigyire.
“The local community leaders and landlady were interviewed to establish the facts surrounding the incident,” said Owoyesigirye.
Initial investigations show that Nambiru had been experiencing a lengthy kind of domestic violence from her husband Bululu Moses which had been already addressed by the local leaders and put under investigation by the Child and Family Protection Unit of Kisugu.
At least 56% of married women aged 15-49 reported having suffered physical and sexual violence by a husband as per the Uganda Bureau of Statistics, 2021.
More than one in three women or 36% of women in Uganda experience some degree of intimate partner physical violence which comes with various side effects like suicidal thoughts, increased anxiety, post-traumatic disorder, and mental destabilization among others.
Furthermore, as the fire spread, it was the children’s loud crying for help that alerted most neighbors who rushed to their rescue as they made communications further to the authorities.
A team of officers with the Fire Prevention and Rescue Services from Kabalagala reached the scene in time to ensure the victims’ safety and prevent any more sort of destruction.
Nambiru fled away, she is on the run, however, Kabalagala Police station is vigorously investigating more and on her search for the law to take action.
