The Leader of Opposition in Parliament Mr Joel Ssenyonyi has called upon the government to intervene in the issues concerning the fishermen at Lubya landing site in this Buvuma district where he says that they have been attacked and some times killed by the security officers.
His visit to Buvuma District for belated women’s day celebrations was together with other opposition MPs including Hon.Christine Ndiwalana (MP Kiboga District) Hon.Asinansi Nyakato (Hoima City),Teddy Nambooze,Stephen Sserubula and Hon.Charles Tebandeke were invited by Buvuma Woman Mp Susan Mugabi.
“The military uses a very heavy high hand on them as they do what they say is cubbing down illegal fishing, they are brutalising the people, they are killing them and so on.In parliament we did discuss this matter and the law was passed and among other things we were saying is the military needs to get off the lake,” Mr Ssenyonyi said.
LOP also re-echoed the need for the immediate demilitarisation of the lake asserting that the military is doing more harm than good to the people around the landing sites allover the country in quest for fighting illegal fishing which has led to loss of lives .
“We have the marine police let it do its job because you see the military comes to fight ,they come to deal with enemies of the state and these are not enemies of the state ,these are Ugandan people who are trying to make out a living,” Ssenyonyi said.
