The Uganda Bureau of statistics (UBOS) has extended the closing day of census night from May 19 to May 25.
The bureau noted in a statement that due to some challenges that have been there faced by some Enumeration Areas (EAs), they had lost some time as the census could not officially start on Friday 10th, and that such areas have been given an opportunity to continue with the Enumeration until they complete their assignments.
“This is therefore, to inform you to request the Household Heads that have not been Enumerated during the past days to make appointments with their LC1 Chairpersons to agree on the date and time when they can be enumerated before the end of the waiver period,” the statement reads in part.
On the starting day of the exercise, news went around the public indicating that some enumerators had faced challenges in operating the digital machines used in capturing data.
On Wednesday, the bureau named the worst and best districts citing insecurity was the major reason as to why some districts had not counted at least 50 per cent of their threshold by the day six.
Worst districts included; Kaabong, Napak, Animal and Nwoya among others.
Dr Chris Mukiza, the executive director of Ubos said that some of the problematic places included: Apaa, Obongi and Paralo, village found between Amuria and Gulu Districts.
Bureau officials also said that some villages were missing on the system owing to incomplete listing mapping, others were hard to reach constraining the enumerators but also slowing the pace of the process.
“You may recall that login challenges were resolved within a period of one to four days, in addition the management developed generic logins for villages to enable work to begin which became effective on the fourth day,” the statement read.
Earlier on Thursday, the Executive Director Chris Mukiza noted that the program had taken a steady progress despite the delays in the begining and that there would be any extensions By Friday (Seventh Day) many regions had successfully completed with over 70% of their household counts and the exercise initially anticipated to end on Sunday.
Some of the best districts included; Budaka with 92 per cent, Butambala with 85.5 per cent, Manafwa 85.4 per cent, Kibale 82.2 per cent .
