Buganda Road court has issued an arrest warrant against Novelist Kakweza RukiraBashaija for absconding. His 4 sureties were summoned to appear on 11th/April to explain his whereabouts or pay ten million shillings in case he jumps bail.
In a recent tweet Kakwenza scoffed at the court;
“I don’t know why the magistrate is supergluing on my case yet it’s obese for him. He should send me my passport and transport money.”
Kakwenza Rukirabashaija is a Ugandan novelist and lawyer. He is the author of The Greedy Barbarian and Banana Republic: Where Writing is Treasonous.
The Ugandan Activist and writer Kakwenza wrote a series of abusive insulting tweets about the President of Uganda, Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni and his son, Kainerugaba Muhoozi which followed an arrest in December 2021 with charges of offensive communication.
He later appeared in court to apply to move his case to a high court and for his passport to be returned so he can travel to Kenya for medical treatment. Kakwenza’s lawyer had previously alleged that he was illegally detained by military intelligence officers and special forces soldiers and subject to torture by the Prison Services.
He was released on bail later in January and appeared on television to reveal painful-looking welts crisscrossing his back and scars on other parts of his body.
Although authorities had taken his passport, Rukirabashaija was able to slip out of Uganda by going to neighbouring Rwanda. He then entered a third, unnamed country before the UN refugee agency facilitated his travel to Europe.
